The Bugatti Type 35 was extremely successful in races all over Europe and Ettore Bugatti wanted to make the winning Grand Prix racer available for the 'masses'. The engine used in the Type 35 was high sprung and not really suited to use on the roads so Ettore had to look for alternatives. He chose the four cylinder engine used in the Type 40 and installed it in a chassis similar to the Type 35's, the Type 37 was born.
The Type 37 proved instantly successful as provided a Grand Prix winning chassis for roadcar money. It was available in two different versions, the naturally aspirated Type 37 and the supercharged Type 37A. Production lasted until 1930.
This specific example is seen here at the 2002 Bagatalle Louis Vuitton Classic where it competed in the unrestored class. Interestingly it features the Bugatti patented wheels also used on the Type 35B Grand Prix racers.

This specific type 37 is wellknown among all the people who knows just a little about Bugattis, and The true Bugattist who owns the car is as wellknown all over the european continent as his beautyfull car! The Car has truly never been restored but continues to be completely original, and performs very well, to the best of my knowledge! Vive La Marque Carsten Christiansen http://www.t-web.dk
Grand Prix racer for the road
Wouter Melissen 4-7-2002
In an era where the Bugatti Type 35 and its variants ruled the Grand Prix scene the Type 37 was the closest one could get to the Grand Prix racer on the road. The ladder frame chassis and suspension are very similar to the race car. Sure 60bhp doesn't sound like much but in its day it was quite much especially considering the small displacement. A modern day Type 37 would by like the Williams FW24 with an M3 engine, lights and fenders, more realistically the McLaren F1 or the Ferrari Enzo. Even more stunning is the fact that this example is completely unrestored and after 75 years still runs and looks really good. A big thumbs up for Bugatti and its owner!!
