Page 1 of 1 From the early years of automotion to the 1970s hillclimbs were a popular discipline in motor racing with many of the top manufacturers building hillclimb specials. The high danger involved in driving with high speeds on narrow mountain roads led to the disapearance of many of these climbs and the manufacturers lost interest. Of the climbs that continued the 7.37 miles Pikes Peak hillclimb was the most popular and has now reached a legendary status.
One of the major contenders each year is the New Zeelander Rod Millen. His entrant for the 1997 event was this heavily modified Toyota Celica. The silhouette racer ran in the unlimited class. Nobody was able to challenge him as he finished over 30 seconds ahead of his closest competitor with a time of 10:04.54, less than half a second slower than his 1994 track record.
The Pikes Peak special is seen here at the 2002 Goodwood Festival of Speed where it fastest up the hill as well! Page 1 of 1
