Click here to download printer friendly version Inspired by Volkswagen's W12 supercar concepts and the Touareg off-roader, the Tarek is set to compete in the world's most gruelling rally, the Rally Paris Dakar. Launched at the 2002 Essen Motorshow the Tarek comes equipped with a 218bhp Diesel engine. This engine, like all Diesel engines, doesn't impress when it comes to horsepower, but, with 390 Nm on the tap, it will easily outrun much more powerful petrol-engined adversaries.

Three teams will be entered. Leading the way is the very experienced and former winner Jutta Kleinschmidt.

 Diesel or Gas

You guys slamming Diesels need to do your homework. This is just like the old Chevy VS Ford thing. I have been a top gas Technician for many years. Last year I bought a Mercedes diesel. I don't know what took me so long, my father was a Diesel mechanic for bingham county for over 30 years. I drive my Mercedes on 100% peanut oil the way Mr. Diesel designed them to run on as A tribute to my father who died on the 9th of last month. I hope the diesel wins. I hope it blows the doors off of all of them. Why, I have been fighting with gas for years. Engine management systems etc. A direct injected Diesel engine with no computer, running on straight cooking oil will burn 90% cleaner than the best gas engine and all of it's sensors. Plus, there was a Diesel put in service just after WWII in Taiwan that was never shut down for service until about a year and a half ago. How many gas engines can make that claim? Diesel engines have been slow because almost all of the money spent on research has been for gas. I work on million dollar vessels. Some are incredibly fast. Diesel engines. The war we were just in? Massey Fergusen Diesel engines on the vehicles. So, live a little. Put away the old prejiduces and enjoy the new/old technology.
 VW's Rule

VW's Rule!!! And I'm not saying that as a generic comment. VW designers have always taken into consideration what does a specific vehicle need to be the best. In this case an odd body style on an engineered frame and motor, most likely perfect for harsh distance desert driving...Bottom line I hope one of my friends buys it so I can try it out, because it's not practical for me. German Engeneering is still tops in my book. I've had cars from everywhere, being a military man I get to go lots of places and had my share of cars...And Germans have a good reputation for a good reason.
