Click here to download printer friendly version Launched in 1992, the first of the Lancer EVO series was built specifically to homologate the Lancer Group A rally car. For homologation at least 2500 (road going) examples of the rally car had to be produced. With 5000 built in December 1993, the EVO easily exceeded that figure. The road going versions were basically equipped versions of the rally racer. They were available in two version, the fully equipped GSR and the lightweight bare RS version.

In the 1993 World Rally Championship Kenneth Eriksson and Armin Schwarz campaigned Group A Lancers with two second places as best results. Mitsubishi scored a promising fifth in the constructor's championship.

For 1992 the Evo was WAY ahead of its time! What a sleeper it must have been back then!
