They replaced Dr. Harvey Postlethwaite, whose final Ferrari design, the F1/86 was a disappointment, scoring no victories during in 1986. Not only did Brunner start with a clean sheet for the new F1/87, he could also use a brand new twin-turbo V6 engine.

While built around the same size fuel tank, the carbon-fibre composite monocoque of the F1/87 was visibly sleeker than that of its predecessor. Suspension on all four corners was by double wishbones with pull-rod actuated in-board springs and dampers. Serving as a fully stressed member was a new twin-turbo V6 with a 90° instead of a 120° V-angle. Although fitted with the mandatory pop-up valve that set the maximum boost at 4.0 bar, the new V6 produced 950 bhp in qualifying trim.

With Michele Alboreto and Gerhard Berger at the wheel, the F1/87 debuted in the season opening Brazilian Grand Prix. The car proved fast but unreliable. In 32 attempts, the car only finished only 13 times but when it did finish, it placed in the top four 11 times. The continued work during the season paid off and the year ended on a high with Berger winning the final two rounds of the championship. The season finale even ended in a one-two with Alboreto placing second at Adelaide. This left Ferrari as one of the favourites going into the 1988 season.
