This Subaru representative sports car has evolved dramatically for 2006. With the aim for even more improvement with the aerodynamics, by introducing new design elements, the modelling of the 06MY has reached beyond the level of a mere facelift. However, the true value of the Impreza model change (so it has been always like this) lies in the renewal of the mechanisms.

First, instead of the 2.0-litre DOHC high-pressure Turbocharged engine, the car has a high-potential 2.5-litre DOHC high-pressure Turbo installed. The performance of the engine has been significantly improved, 11 kW (25 PS) in power, and 49 Nm (5.0 kgfm) in torque. Also, with the AWD mechanism, the Driver's Control Centre Differential (DCCD), the mechanism which controls the front and rear torque distribution has changed to an advanced DCCD with a mechanical LSD and a steering angle sensor. The car does not simply have more power, but it is also the realisation of a model that includes the Subaru philosophy of "Active Driving, Active Safety" in the technology providing driving pleasure supported with confidence.

The Subaru boxer 2.0-litre Turbo, the high-power unit that is rare even in the world where the name WRX STI was so highly recognised, has been increased to a 2.5-litre displacement in the 06MY. The performance, which is also above its class, has improved to 280 bhp at 5,600 rpm, and 392 Nm at 4,000 rpm. It now has overwhelming power and torque. The highly-reputed Active Valve Control System has been installed, in the air-intake valve drive mechanism, giving the strong high-end power without sacrificing low-to-mid torque. A secondary air system is also has been incorporated, drawing flesh air into the exhaust port of the cylinder head when starting a cold engine, unburned petrol is reburnt, promoting quick activation of the catalysts.

This 6-speed manual transmission has been developed in-house by Subaru and designed specially for the WRX STI. Based on powerful torque for motorsport, it boasts high strength and rigidity performance, and realises a sporty and smooth shift feeling. For the best matching with the engine output characteristics, cross gearing ratio is used. Also, to prevent mistakenly shifting into reverse while driving, it is designed so the slider ring has to be raised before it will go into reverse. So concentration can be given to steering, when the engine speed reaches the driver's set speed, a REV indicator is installed, which prompts shifting up, with an indicator in the instrument panel and an alarm.
