Launched together with the R8R roadster prototype, the R8C was part of Audi's effort in the 1999 edition of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Running under the stricter LM/GTP the R8C was outpaced by the R8R and for 2000 Audi's sole focus was on the LMP R8R, with three Le Mans victories in a row as a result.

Actually the R8C's top speed at Le Mans '99 was quite comparable to that of the Toyota GT-One... The GT-One hit a maximum speed of 352 km/h on the first part of the Mulsanne straight, while the R8C, at exactly the same trap, hit 349 km/h. That's not a big difference! :) In fact, this 349 km/h value was the highest in the entire LM99 event except for the 3 Toyotas. Only one Mercedes CLR also hit 349 km/h. For comparison, the winning car, the BMW V12 LMR, got to 342 km/h at the exact same place, the Audi R8R hit 335 km/h and, for instance, the 2002 Audi R8, which was the fastest version of the legendary Audi model, "only" got to 330 km/h at that place of the circuit. So the R8C really was extremely quick in terms of top speed (in fact, just as quick as a 1991 Group C Peugeot 905!). It's slow overall times were due to its lower speed on the corners. Let's not forget, the Bentleys EXP Speed 8 and Speed 8 were derived from this model, and they too "only" hit 335 km/h and 326 km/h, respectively, on the Sarthe Circuit. :D Enough
