Responsible for the Eagle Mark 1 and Mark 2 respectively was designer Len Terry, who had also penned the 1965 Indy 500 winning Lotus Type 38. While the Formula 1 car was referred to as the Mark 1 and arguably had a higher international profile, the Indy car was vital to AAR as principle backer Goodyear's highest priority was to break rival Firestone's stronghold on Indy.

Clearly an evolution of the Type 38 design, the new Eagle single seater featured a full length and enclosed aluminium monocoque chassis. Two layers of aluminium were used to ensure the car was strong enough to cope with the exceptionally high loads on high speed oval circuits. At the front, the springs and dampers were mounted in-board and were actuated by rockers. A conventional rear suspension setup was used with reversed lower wishbones, top links and a pair of trailing arms on either side of the car. Girling-sourced disc brakes were fitted on all four corners.

Powering the Eagle Mark 2 was the readily available Ford Indy V8. Displacing just under 4.2 litres, it featured a sophisticated twin-cam design and sported tall intake trumpets and central exhausts. Equipped with the latest Hilborn fuel-injection, it produced as much as 500 bhp. It was mated to a sturdy Hewland, four-speed gearbox. Like its Formula 1 counterpart, the new Eagle Indy racer featured a beak-shaped air-intake; both a thing of beauty and a reference to the car's name. Fully equipped the Mark 2 tipped the scales at just over 600 kg.
