The company also produced a digital data timekeeping system that proved popular with several Group C teams. Getting a closer look at the cars that ran his system inspired Gottifredi to develop a Group C2 car of his own. The ambitious plan was revealed early in 1986.

Considering his close association with the German brand, it was not surprising that Gottifredi decided to construct the car around a Porsche 956 engine and gearbox. Mounted in a steel tubular frame, the Le Mans winning drivetrain was bolted to a purpose-built aluminium honeycomb monocoque. At the front the double-wishbone suspension featured push-rod actuated springs and dampers, while at the rear the in-board springs and dampers were actuated by rockers.

GKW first showed the 862SP in 1987 at the nearby Monza round of the World Championship. The car was not quite ready and did not sport a rear wing yet. The car was back the following year but again did not line up for the race even though Swiss veteran and Porsche expert Claude Haldi was nominated to drive. It is believed the car was submitted to some tests during the 1988 season but ultimately a lack of funds prevented the GKW 862SP to turn a wheel in anger.

With the Group C2 class removed from the roster in 1990, there was little impetus to continue with the project and the 862SP was set aside permanently.
