Chassis:
The very first privately built 962 (under Porsche license), this example was built in Al Holbert's workshop in 1985. Holbert had raced chassis 962-103 since the second half of 1984, so he had a vast amount of experience with the model, which enabled him to carry through some mechanical and aeordynamic improvements. Using 962-HR1 alongside 962-103, Holbert became the IMSA GTP champion in 1985. He continued to race HR1 with great success, scoring a total of nine wins between 1985 and 1988. In 1988 Holbert was named Porsche Motorsport North America director but sadly he perished in plane crash later that year. In his honour, IMSA has retired the number 14. Following a spell in the hands of Gunnar Racing, HR1 was owned by Wayne Jackson and the late Matt Drendel, who also owned 962-103. Following his untimely death, the car was auctioned by Gooding & Co. in 2012 for $935,000.
