Chassis:
Built specifically for the 24 Hours of Le Mans, chassis 956-002 was entered for Derek Bell and Jacky Ickx. They had a near perfect weekend as they started on pole position with a time of 3:28.400 and went on to win the race ahead of the two sister 956s, which finished 3 laps and 19 laps down the order respectively. Following its successful first outing, the Le Mans winning 956 was retired on the spot. Retained by Porsche, was suspended upside down for many years in the Porsche Museum to illustrate the startling levels of downforce generated by the ground effect aerodynamics. More recently, the 1982 Le Mans winning 956 was removed from its unusual position and restored to full running order. In 2022, it was demonstrated at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where Group C's 40th anniversary was celebrated.
