Chassis:
The second of two 787s built, this example was raced at Le Mans in 1990 by Bertrand Gachot, Johnny Herbert and Volker Weidler. It retired with electronic issues after starting 22nd on the grid. The car's career continued well into the 1991 season, when it was raced in the World Championship and also at Le Mans in support of the two new 787Bs. Piloted by Takashi Yorino, Yojiro Terada and Pierre Dieudonne, it finished a commendable 8th overall.
Today the two-time Le Mans racer is owned by Mazda North American Operations. Upon arrival in the United States, the 787 was completely restored with the help of Jim Downing, who used to campaign a variety of Mazdas in the IMSA Championship. Now returned to full running order, it has had regular outings in historic events like the Monterey Motorsports Reunion at the Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca in 2011 and 2012. Here the car was driven by Robert Davis, Senior VP of US Operations, and prepared at the track by Mazda employees, who volunteered their time to allow this fabulous machine to howl around the track once more.
