Chassis:
Originally built as a 350S, this chassis was raced by defending champions Stirling Moss and Dennis Jenkinson in the 1956 Mille Miglia. Sadly their race ended prematurely due to a crash. The car was returned to Maserati and instead of being repaired, it was rebuilt to house the all new V8 engine, turning it into the 450S prototype. It was used extensively in testing but is believed to have never raced in its 450S guise. In 1965 and without an engine, it was eventually sold to the United States. Here it was fitted with a Chevrolet V8 and a Ferrari five-speed gearbox. In 1981, it was acquired by the current owner, who also sourced a correct Maserati V8, which had previously been used as a marine engine. With the help of the Maserati factory, he rebuilt the car to its 450S configuration. Rarely seen since, it was consigned to the RM Auctions 2014 Monaco sale with a pre-sale estimate of EUR 4 - 5.5 million. Unfortunately, bidding stopped at EUR 3.5 million and the car failed to sell.
