Chassis:
Although most likely completed in 1956, this 300S works car's first recorded race came at the end of 1957. It may have been used earlier by the factory team but no firm evidence has emerged to support this. What it is known for sure is that it was shipped to Brazil to hopefully sell it to a local racer towards the end of 1957. Juan Manuel Fangio added more than a little incentive by winning a couple of races at Interlagos and one at Boavista in December of 1957. The car was quickly sold on and remained in Brazil for many years. Eventually, it was fitted with an American V8 and was also re-bodied. Colin Crabbe located the car during the late 1970s and had it shipped to Europe. Here it was fully restored and later during the 1980s it was also re-bodied again in Italy. Among the car's subsequent owners were Michel Seydoux and Irvine Laidlaw. The most recent custodian was an American historic racer, who campaigned the car in Europe between 1999 and 2003.
