Chassis:
One of the three original Shelby Mustangs produced, this car served as the test and development car. After being used for promotional purposes, it was first raced by Jerry Titus in March of 1965. He promptly won the SCCA National race at Pomona in this car. Titus continued to campaign the car until June and it was later also successfully raced by Chuck Cantwell and Ed Leslie. Still owned by Shelby, chassis 5R002 scored another victory in the hands of Titus in February of 1966 at Green Valley Raceway. It was then sold and its subsequent owners continued to race the car with great success well into the 1970s. In 1969, it dominated the SCCA Southwest Division, winning almost every race entered in the hands of Russell Fish. Following its retirement from contemporary racing, it sat for many years in a Mexican desert before it was eventually returned to the United States in 1989. After being shown at 'The Quail' in 2010, this most important of Shelby Mustangs was submitted to a complete restoration, which was completed in time for the Mustang 50th anniversary celebrations.
