Chassis:
Equipped with a competition engine and covered headlights, this steel bodied 250 GT SWB California Spyder was shown at the 1962 New York Auto Show by North American distributor Luigi Chinetti. It was subsequently sold to Californian distributor John van Neumann’s Ferrari Representative of California in Hollywood by Chinetti but who the first private owners was, remains a mystery. Having changed hands only twice, the car joined the collection of college professors Charles Betz and Fred Peters in 1973. Over time, they restored the car and it was first shown in the early 2000s. Following appearances at most major North American events, chassis 3099GT was eventually acquired by the next custodian in around 2008. A prominent Ferrari collector, he showed the car at select events during the next decade and a half. The Ferrari Classiche certified 250 GT SWB California Spyder was eventually consigned to headline the 2023 Gooding Amelia Island Auctions. It was the most expensive car sold during the weekend at $18 million.
