Chassis:
British Alfa Romeo agent F.W. Stiles ordered this 6C 1750 SS as a rolling chassis. In London, it was equipped with a four-seater tourer body by Carlton. The car was also equipped with a larger fuel tank for long distance events. Chassis 0312906 was then sold to amateur racer Leonard Headlam, who entered the car in the inaugural Double 12 race at Brooklands with Bentley-boy J.D. Benjafield as his co-driver. Unfortunately, the Carlton bodied Alfa Romeo was not ready in time. Headlam did field it in various events including the 1929 Tourist Trophy, where he placed 14th overall.
At the end of the 1929 season, Headlam offered the car for sale for £925. He was sadly killed early in 1930, in a road accident. The Alfa Romeo did not find a new owner until 1931. One of the subsequent custodians repainted the car from the original green to red. Among the later owners were noted collectors Peter Newens and the Mazjub family. Between 2005 and 2007, it was completely restored to its original configuration and colour scheme. In 2012, it was offered at auction but failed to sell. The unique 1750 SS has changed hands since.
