Chassis:
One of the Type 55s bodied with the Jean Bugatti designed Roadster body, this car served as a works entry in the 1932 Mille Miglia. The only Type 55 ever raced in the Mille Miglia, it was raced by Achile Varzi and Count Luigi Castelbarco. The car ran as high as second behind Tazio Nuvolari's Alfa Romeo until it was forced to retire after a rock punctured the fuel tank. The car was repaired and registered at the Strasbourg Bugatti dealership but it is believed the car did not leave the factory. Instead, it served as the personal car of Jean Bugatti. It was eventually sold and may have been owned by famous French artist Andre Derain. In 1946, it was acquired by Georges Metz, who had been a lifelong friend of Jean Bugatti. Some five years later, it passed to a young Parisian lawyer, who would go on to own enjoy the car for three decades. The next custodian was great Bugatti collector Nicolas Seydoux, who at one point owned over 20 different examples. In 2008, it was acquired by Peter Livanos. He had the car comprehensively restored by Ventoux Moteur Ingénierie. Rarely seen since in public, it was consigned to the Gooding Pebble Beach auctions.
