Chassis:
The fifth of six R8s built for the 2000 season, chassis 405 was first pressed into service for that year's Le Mans test. Entered for Allan McNish, Laurent Aiello and Stéphane Ortelli, the car clocked the fastest time during the test. In the race itself, this R8 placed second overall behind the sister car. For the remainder of the season, the car was raced by Frank Biela and Emanuele Pirro in the ALMS, scoring victories at Texas and Las Vegas. From 2001, this R8 was raced by the Champion Racing satellite team. Although the car finished on the podium several times, no further victories were scored. The car was sold to an enthusiast in the United States and restored to its 2000 Le Mans configuration. Prepared by Rogers Motorsports, it was then driven for several years in historic races and demonstration runs by owner Dough Smith. Chassis 405 has more recently been acquired by a British enthusiast, who ran the car at the 2017 Spa Classic as part of the Global Endurance Legends demonstration runs.
