Chassis:
The very last B-Type constructed, R14B was delivered new to Johnny Wakefield with a 1.5-ltire engine built to C-Type specifications with a Zoller supercharger. It was finished in dark blue and raced by Wakefield with considerable success both on the British isles but also on two occasions on the European mainland. The best results were a pair of victories at Brooklands. Wakefield raced the ERA through to the start of the 1939 season until he felt it lacked competitiveness and replaced it with a Maserati 4CL. Sadly, Wakefield died serving the Fleet Air Arm during the War. From his estate, R14B was acquired by Reg Parnell, who sold the car to Bob Gerard in 1945. He continued to race the car for several more years before it was retired. During the mid-1950s, it changed hands several times before it was acquired by Donald Day in 1958. He would go on to race the ERA in historic for many years but sadly lost his arm when the car rolled over. Making a remarkable recovery, he returned to racing despite his injury. In 2016, he finally parted with his much beloved ERA and it is now part of a formidable, American stable of important historic racing cars.
