Chassis:
This third series 8C 2300 was equipped with a beautifully understated Castagna cabriolet body. It was delivered new in October of 1934 to Erminio Cidonio, who was the young heir to a sizable fortune. Chassis 2311214 was sold on 1937 and eventually left Italy in 1942 when it was acquired by American enthusiast Haig Ksayian. A decade later he added a Zagato bodied example to his stable. Ksayian owned both 8C 2300s until the early 1990s. Both cars eventually passed into the ownership of passionate collector David Sydorick. He decided to restore the Zagato bodied car and to sell the Castagna Cabriolet.
The subsequent owner entrusted his prized possession to master restorer Paul Russell. With help from model expert Simon Moore, the Castagna Cabriolet was carefully restored to its original 1933 configuration. Almost all of the body panels and even the wooden frames could be used again. Finished in a handsome combination of a deep, dark blue and a rich, dark claret, chassis 2311214 was ready in time for the 2008 Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance. Here it was awarded 'Best in Class' in the 'European Open 1922 - 1934 Class.' A few days earlier, it had completed the Tour d'Elegance without a hick-up, underlining it worked as good as it looked.
A year later the owner decided to part with the magnificent 2.3 Alfa Romeo and entered the Castagna Cabriolet in the Gooding & Company Pebble Beach auction. It eventually sold for a staggering $4.18 million including buyer's premium.
