Chassis:
Chassis 550-01 was the very first of a long line of purpose-built Porsche racing cars. Following its debut win in the Eifelrennen and outing at Le Mans, it was sold to Jaroslav Juhan in South America. He first raced the car in the Carrera Panamericana, and subsequently campaigned it with and without its hard-top for several more years. It was long believed to be lost, until it surfaced in derelict condition in a Mexcican shoe factory towards the end of the 1990s. Following a closed bid auction, it was acquired by an Australian enthusiast.
There was relatively little left of the car, so a substantial restoration was called for. The work was entrusted to Joe Cavaglieri of Sherman Oaks in California. About a year into the project, the owner had second thoughts and arranged for the restorer to find a new custodian. He found a noted collector from Florida, who was keen to take on the responsibility. The job was finally completed early in 2005 and the very important Porsche has since been shown at many noted events. Among them were the 2005 Quail, a Motorsports Gathering and the 2010 Goodwood Festival of Speed where it is pictured. On both occasions the Carrera Panamericana was celebrated.
