Using a 350S chassis, the first 450S was completed late in 1956. It was raced in the season opening event in Buenos Aires by Sir Stirling Moss and Juan Manuel Fangio. It was sent back to the factory and extensively modified specifically for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The most obvious change was a completely new body styled by Frank Costin and constructed by Zagato. It was also renumbered 4512.
