Chassis:
This is the Porsche 936 that was built by or much more likely for Reinhold Joest in 1980. At its debut the car was referred to as the 908/80 but today it sports the chassis number '936004'. In 1980 Joest and Ickx drove it to a strong second place at Le Mans, a feat Joest repeated in the 1981 Nürburgring 1000 km with Jochen Mass. For that year's Le Mans race Joest was joined by 1979 winner Dale Whittington and Klaus Niedzwiedz. Eclipsed by the refurbished Works cars, the fourth 936 eventually failed to finish the race. Entrusted to Mass and Bob Wollek, the car scored numerous victories in the Interserie championship. Joest and Mass also scored a win in the 1981 Kyalami 9 Hour race.
After an Interserie season in the hands of Leopold von Bayern, chassis 936-004 was finally retired from contemporary racing at the end of 1983. Some time ago the former Joest car was acquired by a Swiss enthusiast. He had the car restored to full running order and has raced it regularly since. Among the many successes were multiple class-wins in the Le Mans Classic and the championship in the Classic Endurance Racing series. One of only two privately owned Porsche 936s, it is seen here at various European tracks, including Le Mans.
