Chassis:
Displayed on the official Mercedes-Benz stand during the 1936 Paris Motor Show, chassis 130944 is one of just seven 540 Ks believed to have been fitted from new with coupe coachwork. Its lines were penned by Hermann Ahrens who headed the 'Sonderwagen' (special vehicles) department at the company's coach-building factory in Sindelfingen. In December of that year the car was delivered to a Belgian industrialist and eventually ended up in the United States. From the 1960s it was owned by the likes of Connie Bouchard, John Mozart and the Imperial Palace Collection.
The current owner of the 540 K Spezial Coupe acquired the car in the late 1990s. It will now be offered by RM Auctions in their annual Monterey sale on August 20th along with several other 500 K and 540 K Mercedes. Prior to the sale the car was meticulously inspected and was found to be in remarkably original condition even though it had previously been restored. The very rare and matching numbers Mercedes-Benz is estimated to change hands for a hefty $3.25 - 4.5 million.
