Chassis:
Reportedly this car started life as the prototype (chassis 002), which was extensively tested in late 1960. It then became the first Tipo 63 fitted with the V12 engine and was used during the Le Mans Test by the Serenissima team as 63.008. Presumably the team had already paid custom fares for that chassis, which was later used in the Targa Florio. Chassis 002 as 63.008 was subsequently raced at Le Mans and Pescara with two retirements as a result.
Following the Pescara race, chassis 63.008 was returned to Maserati by Serenissima along with 63.004 and the other 63.008. The latter was dismantled and later rebuilt as the unique Tipo 65. Chassis 63.008 / 002 remained at Maserati along with the SWB 63.002 for many years before it was acquired by the Panini family and completely restored during the 1990s. The ex-Serenissima car now sits proudly in the family's fabulous Maserati Museum just south of Modena.
