The first victory of the Renault Turbo F1 was somewhat obscured by the heroic battle that took place for second spot. Arnoux was dicing it out with the late Gilles Villeneuve in Ferrari 312T4, the way in which he did that is clearly visible in the right picture here. The last two laps before the finish Arnoux and Villeneuve were trading places several times, not in the least concerned about the regular touchings that they made. Finally V won, but the show both put on made some of the most dramatic F1 TV coverage in history. May be Ecclestone and Mosley should review this stuff and take that as a starting point for their efforts to increase the world wide TV audience for the current struggling F1. Real racing such as this would glue spectators to their seats. |
