I recently spoke with a mechanic who used to work on the engine. He told me two interesting pieces of trivia. The main designer of the engine was actually a 22 year old kid, which is incredible. Also, a nickel was placed on its side on top of the head of the engine and then it was started. If the nickel fell over, the engine didn't qualify. When you said smooth running u weren't kidding.

What an engine. Everyone knows Corvette's are great cars. They're beautiful, quiet at speed, handle well, and are very stable at the top end. All it ever needed was a superb engine to really get the ball rolling. The LT5 was it. These LS1's around now aren't bad, in fact they're very good, but there was something about the noise of the LT5 that did it for me. 4 camshafts. 4, not one, not two, but FOUR. That's a lot. And the purists among you will know that there's a BIG difference between those engines and the current lineups. The throttle response was instant, and if you really threw your foot at it there was the most incredible whining sound, almost like a supercharger. I have fond memories of a '95 Corvette I once drove around California. I never found another car it couldn't outdrag. It just went. The gearbox was a bit lumpy, as almost all American manual shifters are, and the hi-tech dashboard was a bit interesting, but once you got past the flirting and got into the hardcore driving it was amazing. With the redesigned rear section, especially the suspension modifications, a stupidly steep tailslide was very easily obtained and controlled. What a car, one of my favourites for sure.

i believe you are wrong in your statement of production years, there were some 80 made for experimentation in 1989 with the majority of them going over to britain. officially released for purchase in 1990. in 1993 the horsepower increased from 375hp to 405 hp. i hope this has helped!
