My very first drive of a car with a six-figure price tag was one of these. I was very impressed by the stability at speed, the suppleness of the ride (despite the 18 inch wheel and tyre package) and the general feeling of quality and refinement throughout. I was a little disappointed that I didn't get the opportunity to give it some stick. Still, the cultured rumble of the V8 up front gave me a big hint of the E55's potential. The latest E55 has a tough act to follow.

I find it interesting that so many folks have commented on the M5, but not a single posting on this car. In every comparo test I've read between the 2, the M5 was the better enthusiast's car. While that is probably true on the track or open road, I chose my 2001 E55 over an M5 (they are all but identically priced) because it comes in automatic, while all M cars are stick shift. Plus the interior of the E is much better than the 5 series (I traded in a 1997 528). Besides, an every day car should be judged as such. LA traffic is not conducive to pleasant driving with a stick most of the time. As my daily driver, this is simply a superb ride. It is roomy, comfortable, has a great sound system, has low maintenance requirements, and is truly a blast to drive slow or fast. The times I feel like autocrossing, I take the Ferrari.
