I love this car. It is definitly a love it or hate it design, but Ford wanted it to look like the original. I think it's like that because its so simple. square headlights, square grill, round taillights. If only it had a supercharged 427....
Can't improve on the 60's shape?
Gee
11-6-2003
Erm, perhaps you should have a look at the 1960s Ford GT40 Mk1 Gulf. Ford haven't changed the shape of this car because, they don't need to, as it is the most beautiful creation with wheels ever. And the person who's father has many a Ford (you lucky person), Le Mans isn't in Britain.

Are Ford in sobad shape that they dont are able to pick up any more than a design from the 60's.? Are James May not able to bring out a new classic and do Ford have any future as a car maker, as a brand. Well I wonder. Have been in the industry for 12 years and we are asking questions when Ford must throw in the towel and be a holding company for the rest of their brands.

The new Gt 40 is truly a beautiful car. It performs well also. Equal to the Viper. It was in some consumer car magazine were I read that it actually do 0-60 in 3.9sec and 1/4mile in 12.1secs. Pretty quick. It must be because of the wait less weight that allows it to compete with the viper in stats.
 hmmm bigger motor?

they may have got the power up, but it would be even bigger, if they but the orginal size engin in the back, they have lost some power to the reduced displacement! BUT! it has ket its supercar status! all i can say is I WANT ONE!

The GT40 has got to be my most admired car of all time, i'm only 15 and didnt get into cars very long ago but i know everything there is to know about this beauty and theres no one that could convince me theres anything better out there. I know it has competition from Fererri in Le Mans and there is other cars around that out do it in power like the Maclaren F1 GTR but it isnt as good to drive, nothing could ever out do the GT40 in overall performance. If you have the money to be able to keep one of these cars, Believe me its worth the money, every penny.

"why do you americans insist on judging cars on numbers alone? so what if that whatever viper has 800bhp? doesn't mean it's any good. so what if it can do a 0-60 in 2,8 secs? does it mean that it is reliable enough to last the 24hrs for le mans? (i am refering to the original of course). and when will you learn that the only country that thinks american ""sports"" cars are any good is america. and before you go on about how the gt40 is a american car, don't forget that it was based on a lola, engineered by a brit and built in uk. just to clarify, the street gt40 of yore was the least powered car produced and that had 306bhp and could still post a 0-60 of 5.3secs. you also have to note that this was in a car that had no fancy fuel injection and only a four speed gearbox (manual naturally as only wimps use auto boxes)."

WOW! this is awesome, america finally has a car that can compete with a 360. However, the ZO6 would still be my car of choice because of its price, 50 grand. But i am still glad Ford finally has a car as good as the viper and the ZO6. I am excited for this car to make it to production, which i heard it will.

I'm surprised again by your thoughts about cars. I noticed your comment title saying that this car will smoke a McLaren F1. If you really think about it obviously the 627bhp V-12 BMW engine that powers the McLaren would beat a 500.1 bhp V-8 Ford engine.

"Sindbad, unfortunately, your GT90 hero will never see the light of day. It's a supercar for sure, a one-off hybrid that is extremely radical in it's looks and engineering. Yet this where the the GT40, again harking back to brute simplicity, shines. The parts for the motor are on the shelf, whereas two twin-turbo inline sixes that are hybridized into a V-12? Yikes! It's simple design that starts a good car, and it's user friendliness that sells it. A smart 500 ponies in a 3000 lb. mid engine car that DOESN'T GENERATE UP TO 1500 DEGREE ENGINE TEMPS I'll take any day. That thing is a mutant with a furnace on it's back. What...I'm I gonna fire pottery at 235 mph? Assuming I'm so alarmingly rich, I could actually buy this thing...that's another thing...the GT40 is within reach...future turbo turtle shell isn't...I mean yea it's impressive and all, but this car does really nothing compared to the first time I actually saw good pix of the new GT40. My jaw dropped. My heart tweaked. I ran yelling from the room, grabbed my girlfriend, pointed her to the screen all the while jumping up and down yelling ""See! I told you ! I told you!"" Not like she knew what is God's name I was raving about other than the fact that she spotted the car a day earlier and thought it was the new concept Mustang. Oh No! I says...and on and on until she mashed me with a rolling pin, and...no really, Sinbad...you are like the other guys who just don't get it either. Nothing against you and yours, it's just you don't see what the fanfare is, while others do. If the new GT40 actually hits the streets, it'll be the talk of the town for long time. I'm not a Ford guy either, I like Chevys and Mopar. Lookout Dodge Viper, and lookout Chevy Corvette. Ford is punching back, they are coming out swinging. I'm already saving money..."

This is the most demmaned car i have ever seen!! So many ford freaks want ford to built this car so badly that maybe they will go on strike across america if they do not! To me this car is no big deal at all. I think the GT40 had its share of glory but now it is the new age and ford should have bloody hell built the GT90. That car to me is the most facinating american car ever built! It looks so damn good and then there is the performance. It really performs like hell man!! This car is by the way confirmed for production and it will be called the Ford GT.

"I didn't want to ruin your party guys, I do not have a single problem with the GT40, it looks and goes as good as anything I know. The point I'm making is rather this: I don't understand the decision made on behalf of Ford. Cars like these are not made in the hope of profit. These are a statement on behalf of the manufacturer, a show-off if you will, ""Her'ya go folks. Look what we can do"". Well, they have already proved themselves with this car in the 60's. This is why I don't understand why they did not work more on the stunning GT90 and made statement with that car. The GT90 is carrying along the heritage, it is obviously based on the GT40, it's looking great and if you look at the specs it would smoke any GT40 any day. That car would be a lot more of a statement in my opinion than revamping the GT40. And again, before I'd ruin anyone's day: I love the GT40 it's a fabulous car, I hope all of you fellas who desire to have on will be able to afford it some day."

I mean you Sinbad, and all you who cannot fathom the beauty, style, class, and heritage of this car!! There has never been, and given the product of the past 25 years, never will be again such a car as the Ford GT40 (and mind you, I don't like Fords as a rule). You want to whine about style? You WILL not tell me the bubble styling (what did they call it when first introduced... 'organic'?) is more attractive!! Not even Ferrari or any of the other exotics have so singularly matched the style of the 40. Yes, they've made MANY beautiful cars, but never quited so eloquently summed up in one vehicle! And yes, it must be a CAR styling: sensual, mechanical, functional. You whine about NOT ENOUGH PUNCH? You tell me when ANY of you COULD even APPROACH the limits of this car!! I couldn't and I've done the road circuit before (and would never engage in any braggadocio about it either). Unless you're one of the top pro ROAD CIRCUIT drivers of today (or perhaps modern history), or maybe a top club driver in the fastest classes... NOT EVEN!! Put your balls back in your pants, tuck the rest of it between your legs, quit drooling over price tags and names, and take a course in the classics of automobile history (and please take an art appreciation course from the named stylists, Pininfarina and Bertone among the many others). Yes, this is NOT an original GT40!! It is its progeny, fruit of the father's loins. From what I can tell, this is the car that would be produced for today if Ford had NEVER STOPPED making the GT40. And yes, I know 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder'. However, there are SOME truths to be found in life. The Ford GT40 is one of them.

you guys keep comparing the hennesey vipers to the stock gt40. Hennessay is a company that tunes vipers and soups them up. There are many ajustments made to those vipers to make them so powerful, and your comparing a souped up car to a standard gt40. Lets try souping up a gt40 to the max and see whos faster.
 WHY???

I struggle to understand what the big deal about this car is. I wonder why Ford spent money (and probably a lot) to blow the dust off a 40-year old car. Could you imagine anyone else doing such an idiot thing? Why not spending a little bit more on the smashing GT90 and put it into production? That was a much better car in any sense. Stronger, quicker and so,so much more exciting in its looks. If you want a replica of the old GT40 (and this one is a replica too, even if it's from Ford, as it is not the original) you can by them anywhere. Would cost you a lot less than this pathetic effort from Ford and with most of them running on decent Ford V-8 engines you could not use their full capacity in most countries either anyway. That's all folks...
Oh damn! When can I buy this!

Yea, yea...there are slightly faster exotic cars on the roads, and of course, somebody will always be building a faster machine...yea , yea...be quiet already. This isn't about that. This is about the re-issue (albeit slightly updated (!)) of one of the most beautiful old school bad boys. I've lusted after this machine since I was 3, and I grew up with Speed Racer. The lines, the look, the sheer persona... sure I'd rather have an original, but if I could buy one of these (Gulf, of course) new from Ford, who would care? The chances of you running into that Hennesy Viper are next to nil, but the chance of you smoking some meathead are guaranteed every time you'd take it out, if you desired to play. Man...if Ford EVER makes any of these, I will buy one...oh yes...one will be mine...

This is a beauty of a vehicle that, by the way goes more than skin deep. It was designed to celebrate the winning history of the origional GT40 and it has faithfully recreated the body of the car. It has upped the horsepower a considerable bit and it has been able to create a beautiful car. This automobile will most certainly become a legend, and will be a limeted edition car with a price tag around 100,000. It shows how great automotive history truly is.

Im sorry but sometimes it doesnt matter whether or not this car can smoke a Hennesey Viper. I know that car is great and i know that company has pushed that car to a 2.8 0-60. It is a good car, but there is no tradition. The original GT40's beat out the Ferraris in the Lemans. Havent you ever read the story of how the GT40 came screaming around the corner with the Ferrari trailing behind? This car will always be great. It has tradition, class, and all out American muscle. Sometimes it goes beyond how much torque a Ford V8 can muscle out. It matters what this car went through and how it came out on top.
There is a even better dodge viper..............

it is called the 2001 Doug Levin Stage 4 viper. It has a whopping and I mean a whopping 1175hp!!!!! Whose is going to play with that. And the GT40 does not suck it is just not that good a performance car. It looks ok but I really do not like the back part of the car. Ford should have made an entirely new car. But if I had that kind of money I would have spend it on a Vanquish!!!

This is one ugly car. Why would you waste your money on this junk. To whoever said that vipers had 500hp and this had 500 hp, you must be looking at the old vipers. If you look at the old GT40 it has like 200hp. The Dodge Hennessy Viper 800TT has 800 hp. it would smoke this piece of crap.

 The choice of J Mays
IBrake4Rainbows
16-11-2002
J mays, Fords styling head, had two choice for the Detroit show. 1: build an extreme supercar for the 21st century, use the Gt name and a few design cues from the original A La GT90. or 2:create an almost exact replica model, and rework it so subtley you could hardly tell. He chose option 2, we should have had option 1.

The new GT40 is an awesome car, but I think that an extra 30 or 40 kW might be a nice addition. Also, bigger wheel flares, like the original racing GT40 would complete the picture of this car's full potential.

"There are several cars of the past they look so great, but their outdated technology make them hardly usable today or rather, limited; some cars that make you wonder what they could be like if they were built with nowdays' technology. The gt40 is one of them, and in this revised replica version it's simply a great car. I hope it's going into production, it would be nice to see it on the streets."""

The viper and the GT40 are two completely different cars! The viper having 500 BHP, as does the GT40, just shows it is an overacheiver, not in the same class as the GT40! That is like comparing a maxima (a high powered fullsize) to a corvette. (an all out sports car) Get your stuff strait!

This GT40 will change ford in a postitive way. They didn't redesign the GT40 a lot because it is about bringing back a legend. I can't wait for this car to be out. Let's just hope this is one more step to the GT90....

Yes would say so, when they can send an adjusted GT40 from 1967 on the road as 2003 model. Were are the designers.? Were are the creativity and fantasy to get new GT40 on the road and let it capture people like this one. Can they sell it for 100000 dollars as a Ford, they are good. And yes it is an evergreen and it is a Ferrari killer. Ford can if they want too, but do they in the future follow it up, so it is not a one off?? Who shall sell it, the ordinary Ford dealers are not competent, must they use Aston dealers for this.?? Just wonder. Think James Mays must dig for his creativity when he shall launch Capri in 2005, hvae seen pictures and it looks quite good I must admit

Great Design .... it's an evergreen. Once I've seen the older Version on the Street and the GT 40 belongs to those cars, which looks much better if you see them live.
