'Also, what happened to Saleen making their own cars (S7), rather than just tuning Fords?'?

Saleen was never really about making their own cars? The S7 was created to answer the European supercars. Also, remember Steve Saleen used to race Mustangs professionally, so it would make sense that his company would mainly consist of modifying Mustangs.

Doesn't it seem strange to anyone else that while Japan, Italy, Germany, Britain and even Sweden often release NA cars with over 80bhp per litre, whereas US engines get much less (on average)despite the money that giants like Ford and GM put into development? Also, what happened to Saleen making their own cars (S7), rather than just tuning Fords?

These figures are for the old '01. The new supercharged Saleen's are pounding out around 425 ponies. One of the advantages to a Saleen isn't just the power. It's that your buying a street legal race car. A Saleen has much better road handeling than the new Cobras thanks to a reworked, race inspired suspension and the aluminum block found in the standard GT. That's why u buy a Saleen. That and as I said earlier. The new one's are producing 425 horses, which is ALWAYS, a plus.

A 4.6 liter V8 should be getting close to those power figures w/o forced induction IMO. The Audi S8 used their 4.2 liter V8 and developed 360 hp so it's not like that's impossible. In my opinion, these engines need some technology, not blowers.
Sorry saleen, the cobra is the new stallion

Its unfortunate that saleen's workhorse is now being outperformed by the '03 SVT cobra. They both use S/C but the cobra makes 390, is cheaper and is practaclly the same as a saleen minus some wheels and body pieces. But if thats what attracts you, i guess you could use the money that you save on the cobra to buy some. I think its perhaps a sign of the times....With the S7 out, saleen should perhaps now focus on racing and the development of world class supercars (although im not sure the S7 IS world class, its still a nice ride). It would be interesting to see a saleen with the cobra engine, with perhaps some goodies on it???....imagine a 450+ hp stang....food for thought
