SaaBlazer |
Dan Flynn 08-17-2005 |
In its advertising for the 9-7X, it's interesting how Saab emphasizes its "Scandinavian Design" elements. Perhaps they're hoping people will either forget or won't catch on to its GM origins. The exterior is nicely done - notice how the hood and front fenders slope downwards. This isn't hasty badge engineering. According to a recent Car and Driver piece, enough attention was given to the 9-7X's performance, particularly in the suspension, to where it feels more like a Saab than a tarted-up TrailBlazer. Not being a hardcore Saab fan, I have no heartfelt opinions about GM's ownership. I guess if Porsche and BMW can do SUVs, it shouldn't be a big deal if Saab follows suit. Are the Swedes losing their brand's identity and character with Detroit in control? Saab was in the position, at least in the U.S., of either increasing sales with new models that dilute their Saab flavor. Or maintaining their independence, with declining sales dragging them into oblivion. |
Another non-Saab |

Just like the Saab 9-2 (a thinly disguised Subaru WRX wagon), this is not a home-grown Saab. From the A-pillars back, you can clearly see the underlying Chevy Trailblazer upon which this vehicle is based. I can understand the motivation to market an SUV, after all, people are buying them like crazy and they tend to have a higher profit margin than passenger cars. Why wouldn't Saab want to sell an SUV? I just hope they've made enough changes inside and mechanically to satisfy Saab aficionados. Otherwise this could polarize their otherwise loyal customer base. |
