Where the Honker 2 came from. |

Len Bailey (1926-1997) was a UK trained engineer who after working in the UK automotive industry started to work (1958) for Roy Lunn at the Ford Dearborn R&D department. In 1963 he was placed in the "Ford Advanced Vehicle Ltd" in the UK where the GT40 was created. He was responsable for the chassis design. In 1966 he was moved to Alan Mann Racing a Ford only race shop. Late 1966 he completed the design of The Honker II a 1967 Can Am car, built by Alan Mann Racing payed for by his employer Ford motor company. In 1968 Ford UK payed for a 3 liter sports designed by Bailey and manufactured by Alan Mann Racing this is the F3L also known as P68. Like the Honker 2 it suffered from lack of down force on the back. I hope this clears up why these cars look alike. |
Kinda Sad... |

Unfortunately the Honker was about as serious as FoMoCo ever got about fielding a winning Can-Am car. On paper it seemed to have some potential; it had about the same size engine as that year's series-winning McLaren M6A's but the difference was all in preparation. McLaren brought two fully-tested cars to that year's Elkhart Lake opener while Holman-Moody seemed to think they could get away with doing their testing at the track. Interestingly, even though Mario said the car was horrible he gave the McLarens a run for their money for a few laps later that year at Riverside. |

Interestingly Paul Newman did just what Andretti suggested and drove the car as a prop during the making of his film: The Winnig. Not surprisingly he crashed it and the remains were laid to rest in the Holman and Moody premises, until the car was restored at the end of the nineties. |

Let's see now: Stingray. Viper. Diablo. Cobra. Pantera. HONKER. I think I see the problem here! |
