Easiest explanation is ........ it's French designers - always quirky 
if you've ever drive the windscreen-less SPyder you'd see why they were coming up with ideas to give ear and eye protection at speed !! The alternative is a full-face race/bike helmet which just ruins the hair. ( You need to think 'French' )
