You only need to shift down when you are slowing down.
No need to start thinking like a racing drive until you've masterd the basics)
Change down when the engine revs ( judge by the sound ) is dropping below "reasonable" ie NOT labouring.
So when you say "accelerate" it's only as required to maintain the speed you've slowed down to and then for subseqent acceleration after the corner/hazard has psased.
