Looking at this: Chevrolet Corvette C6 Coupe - Ultimatecarpage.com - Images, Specifications and Information the transaxle sits forward of the rear axle line. For a conventional mid engine layout you'd have the transaxle pointing backwards. If you fitted an engine to the existing transaxle you'd have the engine taking up too much toom. You'd have to get a new transaxle which takes up the position of where the mufflers are currently
