Crossing items

Some directions will be given by describing the route as crossing various items.
These can be Grid Lines, Electricity Transmission Lines, contours and pretty much anything else the devious route setter can think up.

Final Instructions will usually confirm the definition of crossing the event is going to apply, but here is the common one

If the item cuts across BOTH edges of the road it is a CROSSING.
If it only cuts across one side of the road it it TOUCHING.
It can be argues that if it goes to midway then in one direction of the road it is crossing but not the other. see middle diagram below. If going left to right on left hand side of road you don't cross the line. If going from right to left you do
Well the FIs should clarify, the norm would be to consider that crossing TWICE for either direction.
If it only touches on edge of the road then it is consider NOT to be touching OR crossing.

See diagram

In working the route between the crossings remember the stages and FIs.
Shortest route is the norm and the stage instructions will indicate if CRO.

Ready for stage 4 start ................. 5..............4.................3..............2. ...............1...............GO

[ OK friendly TC marshal has helped you and shown how to read the first 4 grid crossings.... See the attached map segment which shows the route for them ..... ]
