Well, I was using less fuel than those in 20-mpg cars who drove 25 or 30 miles one way to work.
And those whom I drove home from work or drove to one of the bus stops would have a hard time fitting on my bicycle. Sometimes I did go for a bike ride during luch, though.  I kept a mountain bike in the luggage compartment.
BTW, what "shortage" of fuel? There are plenty of oil reserves in Alaska, off the Florida and California coasts, and in the mid-west.
