I dunno if Edmunds is a respected source of opinion (?) but fwiw they seem to like the G8 - calling it the best Pontiac since the original (1964) GTO ..

And they've just released a test-comparison between G8 and the Dodge Charger

That suits me just fine, because I can't see any reason I'd ever have to have track-grade performance.
Like you my bias is more towards a smoother controlled ride than enduring a 'track oriented' family car. Apparently all US-spec G8s get Holdens firmer 'FE2' suspension tune, not the still-ok standard setup which is more accented towards ride quality

A great mod for GTO-era Commodores & Monaros is Koni shocks and struts (the ones you can easily adjust from under the bonnet and boot) which, from what I've read, gives you the best of both worlds at the tweak of a knob.

I dunno if koni offer a similar product for current-gen Zeta Holdens (and Pontiac G8). Certain current HSV models feature GM's dash-adjustable magnaride but they're only available up into the model range, and again more of a 'track enhancement' than for delivering a cushy ride
