I'd say the LMP's are the perfect border between GT cars (that have a street-legal variant) and Formula cars. They are in fact not prototypes of any future vehicle, instead they are purpose built race cars. Wider, lower, lighter than a GT.
Also, the rules of Le Mans are really important, because if they say the GT2 can have 3.6 liter V8 engines, the car manufacturers start producing such cars. The names of the classes changes almost every year, but the street-like and purpose-built distribution were mostly there. And of course try Wikipedia as well.
