My bad...

By the way there's also another Irmscher special, the Omega Evo 500, specially developed in 1991 to compete in DTM. It was basically modified Omega 3.0i 24v with some special parts and a bodykit designed specifically for competition. It had 230bhp and did 0-100km/h in 7"5 seconds.

Apparently 463 cars had the 3-litre 230bhp engine, 36 the 4-litre 272bhp C40 unit and the remaining one had a prototype 3.6-litre 24v engine.

we are now approaching the nineties, and when I mentioned the Lotus Omega, Nota got a bit upset by that

Yeah, well, in the 90's HDT was gone and the HSVs were nowhere near as lairly. After the Walky, it was downhill so too speak. Apart from the VN Grp A, there were no more homologation specials The VN SV and VP GTS had to make do with 220kw 5ltr engines, there weren't any full-blooded, hot-headed HSVs till the GTS-R

Well 300bhp isn't that bad...

It's curious to see that when GM Australia went down on sportiness, GM Europe and GM America had some pretty lairy cars, like the Lotus Carlton, the Irmscher Omega Evo 500, the Buick GNX or the Corvette ZR-1.

Actually, I just realised I was wrong. The VN SV and VP GTS were actually only 200kw. They didn't reach 220kw till the CSV VR 5ltr(CSV are a big tuning company, sort of like Brabus but fully independent of Holden) and VS GTS 5.7 stroker. My bad.

It's not that they went down on sportiness, they just lacked the full-bore specs that were available back in the HDT days. If you follow the evolution of the cars through the 80's and 90's, they never really went down on performance, always improving as the basic Commodore improved. But it was the Brocky specials (SS Grp A cars) that made the HDT model catelogues special. Pity he went mad in the mid 80's and HDT died.

Though that said, the touring cars rules were changing the early 90s such that the GrpA homologation cars gradually became unnecessary.

I am not 100% on this but i'm also sure that Wayne Gardner had some big arse engine he's group made for the VR-VS.. My brother has told me of a mate of his that is very loaded up he bought a WGR engine for his VR it was as close to a V8 supercar as you could get. But other then that i'm very limited on and info.

It's interesting you say that because back in the early ninenties is when really Group A homologation specials flourished in Europe, not only touring car racers, but rally specials too. There are a lot of examples amongst them, the aforementioned Omega Evo 500, the 190E 2.5-16 Evolution II or the M3 Sport Evo as touring cars and the Delta HF Integrale or the Escort RS Cosworth as rally cars. Then japanese cars took over and by the mid 90's all had pretty much ended.

After the demse of Group B ( and Group S ) racing and rally regulations went their different ways as the event managers flexed their financial muscles
Then the madness of different regs for touring/saloon racing within Europe and a seperate reg for pan-Europe destroyed ANY chance of ssupport for homologation specials in the way it had existed before
