But a high-strung, turbo 4 with AWD is going to bog severely off the line if you don't pop the clutch at 6k.

Edit: And as much as it pains the Euro snob in me to say, the G8 is a good looking car. Can't wait to see 'em rolling the streets.

On a short run 1/8mile then yes the EVO would have the edge, the quarter mile would have to give it to the G8, anything longer would be useless for the EVO. Also fuel wise the G8 would be better on fuel and contrary to some reports the G8 was designed to run on the cheaper unleaded NOT premium (from Pontiac) like many other sporty cars in its segment.

Of course they are different cars. But are both sporty sedans in the same preice range. All I'm saying is, the evo does evrything the G8 tries to do, but better and more efficiently.
Everything except for doubling as a fast, practical family car with ample room for 5 adults, and their luggage

Those test cars might be fairly comparable in numerals like price and performance, but not much else imo. One is a compact 4cyl turbo bomb with AWD and manual trans, vs the big RWD V8 auto. Each vehicle has its own set of strengths & weaknesses - horses for courses, as they say

In comparison the lancer evoX has a tiny 2l I4 with 290hp and is quicker, consumes less and looks a whole lot better for about the same price.

so yeah, id keep my money and wait for the evo.
the G8 gets 361hp with AFM and regular unleaded.
tune it properly for premium and it'ssomething like a 40hp-50hp gain apparently

Ive been in a regular lancer before and the legroom in the back is nothing to cry about. I reckon 5 people would fit in confortably enough. and the boot is not exactly small either.maybe not as big as the G8's but still pretty large.

The EVO X and the G8 GT both trap right around 102-104mph.
Same day, same track it will be a drivers race.

The evo has larger sports seats making the rear suitable for amputees only. That is the difference, the Commodore is a big, comfortable car with a big, effortless engine. The Evo may be slightly quicker but the sacrifice is a high strung engine, a harsh ride and lack of room. There is no escaping that the Evo is based off a low cost, small sedan.
Also, I can guarantee the evo will not keep you pleasantly surpised come service time, especially if you are using more performance than the Commodore.

Ah, good. I'd heard our Pontiac GTO, which of course was a 2-door Commodore, had a pretty soft suspension. From what I'd heard it made a great grand touring car but got lambasted for its poor performance on the track. That suits me just fine, because I can't see any reason I'd ever have to have track-grade performance.

I dunno if Edmunds is a respected source of opinion (?) but fwiw they seem to like the G8 - calling it the best Pontiac since the original (1964) GTO ..

And they've just released a test-comparison between G8 and the Dodge Charger

Like you my bias is more towards a smoother controlled ride than enduring a 'track oriented' family car. Apparently all US-spec G8s get Holdens firmer 'FE2' suspension tune, not the still-ok standard setup which is more accented towards ride quality

A great mod for GTO-era Commodores & Monaros is Koni shocks and struts (the ones you can easily adjust from under the bonnet and boot) which, from what I've read, gives you the best of both worlds at the tweak of a knob.

I dunno if koni offer a similar product for current-gen Zeta Holdens (and Pontiac G8). Certain current HSV models feature GM's dash-adjustable magnaride but they're only available up into the model range, and again more of a 'track enhancement' than for delivering a cushy ride

Calling someone who doesn't agree with your opinion a "clown" is ridiculous. And please, learn to use the quote function properly. Thanks.
