What is the purpose of concept cars?

This post is mostly about the 2009 or 2010 Lexus LF-A. It is called a future concept car, but will it be up on the market? I'm talking the full design not bits and pieces of the car on mixed in with other makes and models. It's a beautiful car and think it would be great to see it on the streets. So, what's the purpose of creating this only for us to look at and not be able to drive or own?

Concept cars have a number of roles, some do all, some only do one

1. Company image
2. Technology demonstration
3. Public relations
4. Advertising
5. customer evaluation of solution
6. Testing the water with radical idea(s)
7. Stroking the designers egos
8. Grabbing the limelight at teh time a competitor is launching a new car

To cause model car companies to use valuable up time, resources, and money instead of giving us models that need to be done but aren't. i.e.: 67-68 Mustang Notchbacks, Honda Accords, late model Mercedes
