I like them both, but in different combinations. For instance, i wouldnt attempt to supercharge a 4 cylinder or anything else revving over about 6500rpm, but something thats a bit of a lazier revver i'd supercharge it.

well it depends on what type of supercharger your talking about here. centrifugal superchargers are basicaly the compressor off a turbo, they dont produce the low end torque of other superchargers and produce powerbands very similare to a similary sized turbo but with no lag. saying turbo's have "more psi" is a general and incorect statement if you mean turbo's are capabe of producing more bboost than a supercharger, with anyy number of pulley configs high boost is a possibility, it just happenes turbo's at higher pressures are tpicaly more efficient esp. on higher reving engines. also centrigugal superchargers(or any other charger not mounted to the or replacing the manifold) will have just as may pipes as a turbo just not ran in and out of the turbine as with a turbo which can help when plumbing a V8 with either

these are just 2 examples of a Vortec supercharger kit on both a DOHC 5.4L MOD and 5.7L Gen3, which dont seem to have as much piping as you would think......

Compress the air on the inlet side.
This makes more oxygen available and able to take more fuel and produce more power for the same given swept columne and compression ratio.
On how they actually do that, they use a fast spinning impellor to draw air into the plenum at higher speed than it can exit - so higher pressure/more air.
The compressor is typically connected by belts/pulleys to the main cranskshaft to give more air at highre revs as needed.
http://www.lextreme.com/Turbo.htm covers the 2 main types - roots and twin screw - and go into the details of how they work.
