View Full Version : Tragedy in Asia ~!!! Thousands killed by tidal waves

I found this out a couple of minutes ago.Off the coast of the Indonesian island of Sumatra an earthquake(8.9 at the Richter scale) at the sea floor, caused a big tidal wave or Tsoenami to emerge. This tsoenami struck land throughout the entire coast of the Indian Ocean, causing a huge devastation.Thousands of people were killed and many others injured, many people are still missing.....

This is so sad to happen on Christmas, when noone should be killed.Nor by violence nor by nature... I hope the entire western world gives money, food, medicins and building materials to aid the people struck by this disaster...

For further news i'd like to refer to cnn.com

I'm sorry for those, who became homeless and for those, who died.

(This wasn't a tidal wave but a wave caused by an earthquake.)

my Grandpa lives in one of the cities in the island of Sumatra, around the centre of the quake.

In the attached picture is just a little discription of where he lives...

the BLUE dot is his city and the RED dot is the centre of the quake....

We rang my grandma (who live in another city) last nite and she said that my grandpa felt the quake and ran outside quickly.... but jhe's okay... so i was glad. *phew*

The Earthquake struck an area around 300Km from the Island of Sumatra. The area closest to the Earthquake, recently rounded up to a 9.0, was Aceh, which is a war-torn province of Indonesia. not much is known about the damage of this area because of the tight military presence there.

Major areas hit include Sri Lanka, India, The Maldives, Thailand (the resort of Phuket was hit exceptionally hard, with many tourist casualties) And the wave, caused by the earthquake, and hence a Tsunami, has been felt as far a field as Somalia and The West Coast of Australia.

Recent Aftershocks have been felt as heavy as 7.0 on the richter scale. a Huge disaster as these areas do not have the best infrastructure and the spread of disease and the threat of more aftershocks/tidal waves looms large.

There was a headline on CNN last night saying that an Italian scientist claims that the teutonic activity in that area is so volatile that it is actually affecting the rotation of the Earth. That's nuts.

If the aftershocks are 7.0's, even that is terribly huge. Wont that just bring more and more, slighty smaller, yet deadly tsunami's?

It's 23,000 now, according to BBC teletext.

My brother went on holiday to the Maldives a few weeks ago and only came back last week, couldn't believe it when I saw it on the news, scary stuff. My heart goes out to all those that lost family out there, I can't imagine what it's like.

I have to say that I wouldn't be surprised if the final figure was over 100,000.

People always assume that we are so powerful because of technology. But when it comes down to it, Homo Sapiens are no better off than any other creature when you take into account the alarmingly large number of natural disasters that can occur.

These disasters are always exacerbated by the fact that the often affect the poorest areas of the world, where help is diffucult to get.

I hope those of you waiting to hear from friends or relatives recieve good news, and any UCPers from the region are as well as can be hoped for in the circumstances.

Wow, according to the Associated Press, these huge walls of water/Tsunami hit the coastlines at over 500 mph. :( Seeing all these bodies lying in mass graves makes you think about the havoc that Mother Earth can unleash. :(

To put things in perspective, the disaster happened exactly one year after Bam in Iran was totally destroyed, killing 30,000 people. However as already said before, the death toll now is sure to rise further and 100,000 might become a scaring reality.

Interesting little facts for you.

When this was going on i was watching the news channels on my Cable TV.

BBC: Covered it first
Sky News: Had a Dedicated Tsunami Channel
CNN: Covered it quite well, but kept up reasonable programming
CNBC: Missed it, but there a business channel anyway
Bloomberg:Covered it during their Asia Business segment
Fox News: Played "Portraits of a Soldier:Heroes of Iraq" for the majority of the breaking news segments, then covered it.......about 3 hours later.

That's just very telling.........

BBC now saying 59,000 with many thousands still unaccounted for.

In a marvel of tasteless programme planning the BBC had a house make-over programme, Changing Rooms for those of you who might know, were they redecorated the homes of people who's houses were damaged by flood water in Boscastle earlier this year.

Nice

The number of deaths right now is 78,000. There are still islands that officials haven't even gotten to yet. They say the initial death toll is easily over 100,000 and the final toll after disease, starvation and thirst could top 250,000.

Esperante
12-29-2004, 09:16 AM
The death toll (according to associated press) is around 76,700. If the expected 250,000 is acquired, imagine a city like Cleveland or Edinburgh just being wiped clean off the face of the earth, and you'd have a somehwhat equal comparision.

An aerial view shows tsunami-damaged Meulaboh town, West Aceh, Indonesia, Tuesday, Dec. 28, 2004. Officials have recovered 3,400 bodies in the village so far, but they said they expect to find at least 10,000 died here from Sunday's 9.0 magnitude underwater earthquake and massive tidal waves. (AP Photo/ANTARA)

The worse part is, along the coastline of the Canary Islands are a series of volcanos with tall, loose cliffs hanging over the ocean. If anything disturbs these cliffs, the enitre East Coast could meet up with a 75 foot tsunami, obliterating Long Island, New York, Boston, Savannah, Jacksonville, and maybe even Washington DC. It would also devestate Southern England, West Africa and Spain and Portugal.

Here's a few articles on the latter matter- http://www.skyscraperpage.com/forum/showthread.php?threadid=63871

I heard that since the earthquake, earth days are now micro-seconds shorter, because it disrupted the earth's rotation.

Some scientists are warning that this could just be the first in a series of more massive earthquakes.

Esperante

Wouldn't matter how far inland you live, but how high up. The Hudson lies in a little bit of a valley, but the proposed tragedy from the Canary Islands could easily flood New York City as well as the 'Day After Tomorrow' showed it. And I'm completely serious when I sawy 15 stories worth of water could flood the east coast.

In a marvel of tasteless programme planning...On thursday night the film AI was on some channel or another, it appeared to open with thousands of people being killed by coastal flooding, I'm really surprised that one got through. I could be wrong about what I saw, mind you. Cos I wasn't really paying a lot of attention.Bush said that the USA is sending "$35 billion" in immediate cash relief. I saw that too. I laughed at how it was picked up by one of our broadcasters, but after doing a google for a related story, nobody else had picked up on it. I'd be embaressed to say that he runs my country if I were american.
