View Full Version : Future Indy USGP's still a question.

(GMM) Indianapolis officials still have not decided if F1 will be invited back to the irritated 'Brickyard' next year.

Speedway president Joie Chitwood admitted that the memories of booing fans and flying beer bottles at the sight of the 2005 US grand prix have not yet abandoned him.

''We have to make sure having (it) is good for us,'' he told the St Petersburg Times newspaper, ''the city ... and the fans.

''We have to make the right decision for all involved,'' Joie said, ''and right now we're seeing if it's possible.''

The tricky thing for Indianapolis is the significant investment made at the venue for F1, not to mention a signed 2006 contract.

Chitwood added: ''We're not looking for it to be over yet.''

In Indy's favour, though, is the Speedway's commitment - and appeal - to the sport run by Bernie Ecclestone. The Speedway's president doesn't think a US GP would work elsewhere.

He added: ''I'm not sure a race in Las Vegas or wherever would really match up to what we have.''

Las Vegau - huh ??? WHY do owners in the US only think of STREET circuits as alternatives for F1 ?

Laguna please, after watching the MotoGP run there it confirms it's moving 'up' the formulae :)

Hopefully Laguna isnt held back by off track facilities etc, as it would provide much better racing than Indy or any street race..

With the proposed 20 event calender and still doubt over the US though, we might be up for another 2 new events

it will never happen .. and it's not really a single seater circuit IMHO

It used to be one of THE tracks in Formula 5000 :)
Hosted CART too.

If they sort out the concrete wall along and Rahal and Corkscrew it will be fine and the sand coming onto the track for me just increases the need for driver skill like Zandvoort used to. Possibly with the new F1 rules it may not be as bad as it currently looks.

I'd rather have Laguna Seca than the Indy track anyday.

Would it be possible for them to run at Daytona? I've never seen a open wheel race there before though. I think Watkin's Glen or Sebring might be a good choice too, that is if they leave Indy.

Please, not at Daytona, that's as boring as Indy.

Agreed, NO tracks squeezed inside ovals with no undualtion, no width, PLEASE.
Fine for bikes and carts and NOT F1 :(

Road America, but that would probably fall victim to F1's obsessive concern for safety which could even turn that track into something boring :D

i dont mind when a decent track is put in the middle of an oval (Rockingham or Eurospeedway), but US is al about gimicks so in the necesity to make tracks faster and bigger "spectacles" they take out the elements that make it racing and turned it into the favourite American pastime, cruising. The US cant see why F1 shouldn't fit in this mould like thier INDY series do, the hastily constructed middle sections of track aren't properly planned and street circuits are all just rubbish compared to Monaco, the US should make the best circuits with all that varied terrain, look at what Australia did to Bathurst, the view from the helicopters are incredible, you did well with Laguna Seca and Road America, they are great, yo have a choice, use it!

Every track you've named so far is in the middle of cow country. You wouldn't have the crowds that F1 expects, you wouldn't have off track attractions, you wouldn't have the safety required by F1. And I don't think Vegas wants to shut down anywhere for 2 weeks at a time. The only place currently that qualifies for all of these is Indy, or one of the NASCAR rovals that you all seem to hate so much.

Bahrain is about as far away from mainstream F1 fans as you can get :)

Funny how MotoGP which beats Formula One attendance records around the world , managed to "slum it" at Laguna for the first time this year !!

I think they should have the USA GP at the A1 ring.

Or have two races at Spa.

if i didnt live within a (long) day of a few of the other "possible" tracks I'd agree.
good idea though!

I love Laguna Seca track since the first INDYCAR game on PC! (but I don't think it's wide enough for F1).
Now: no offense to our friends other side of the ocean, but I think that if you want F1 in your country, you should consider building a proper F1 track. I mean, come on: if Bahrain and China can have a specially built F1 track, why can't you?

Why ? Are there rumoured to be WMDs in Austria or Belgium leading to a US invasion and occuption and them becoming the 51st and 52nd states ????

Enquiring minds want to know :D

Because in general, Americans don't care about Formula One. Kimi who?

Waiting for rumors would be a waste of time. We'll just go in now.

Why ?

They are interesting tracks.

Spa usually throws up an interesting result - probably the most unpredictable race on the calander.

It also gives one the opportunity to visit the ham museum in the Ardennes, and stock up on chocolate.

The A1 ring has some truely demanding corners - not like the incredibly dull string of 45°, 90° and 180° turns at Indianapolis.

F1 - the greatest cars and drivers tour the most boring circiuts in the world!

Another idea instead of a US GP - Le Mans in F1 cars.

It was rhetorical - read the rest of the post ???

I've been waiting years for the perfect opportunity to plug the ham museum, and when it comes along all I get is grief!

had this thought aswell, though cant tell how serious you are
wouldnt it be cool to add the F1 field to the 24 hours (assuming they actually lasted that long) along with all the existing classes? mabe something shorter like one of the 3 hour races...
maybe not F1, but some kind of open wheel class...

but not to take the USGPs place!!

I'm always serious ;)

Anyway, the problem with F1 at 24hours would not be the cars - they could be detuned/ beefed up to be more durable.

The problem would be the drivers.

If their necks give out over race distances at tracks like Barcelona they aren't going to last 24hrs.

You'd need a team of about 10 drivers per car!

and so in a way are Spa, Silverstone, the Nuerburgring, Hockenheim and most of all Magny Course. Chicago is not that far away from Road America, and certainly not Milwaukee :)

why not use Zandvoort ? it is less as 50 km away from ansterdam and less as 100 km from The Hague. It has excellent connections(amsterdam airport), railroads, good roads.why not ?

oh yeah, it must in asia or africa, or the usa.damn policy of bernie...
