My friend and i are having a dispute over the meaning of chav. I heard that it means wannabe gangster, but he thinks its U.K. white trash, so what is the real meaning of it?

They don't want to be "posh", to have manners, to treat others with respect.
They want to be lower-class, but with enough money to buy a huge house and lots of flash cars etc.
As seen by people like low-ranking pop-stars, footballers, "reality TV" stars, etc who still act like they're from the roughest ends of the country despite having millions in the bank.

Up until about two years ago or so, they were townies and scallies around my way. I'm fairly certain the definition was the same. Rockports, burberry, tracksuit bottoms tucked into the socks, etc.
