Well im about 1.5 years away from being able to drive and im begining to think about what the first car i should get will be. ill probably get on when i'm about 17-18. and im asking you guys for some suggestions.

-all wheel drive is most preferable.
-good handling and brakes are also preferable.
-power dosen't need to be huge but somwhere around 5-7 0-60 is nice.
-must be solid built(damn salt and snow)
-and my budget will probably be no more then 7000 so the car can't be rare,or new

any way so i was thinking like a R32 but there hard to get, or mabye an audi? but i dont know to much about them. Wrx is another option thats up there, but what do you guys think? and no evos arn't availible here:D

bloody hell....dont know where you live, but here in Britain, a good first car is a Corsa or Micra. Mentioning 'R32/wrx/audi' in the same sentence as 'first car' is absurd unless you are one loaded mofo.... insurance is a killer. 0-60 in 5-7?? Aiming a bit high me thinks!! Out of my mates, the best car is a Civic Type S....

7000 CND and Audi, R32, WRX don't mix too well. If that's your budget then I suggest looking into an FWD econo.

If you still have 1.5 years to go you also have a lot of time to save though. Think about it :)

if your budget is no more than 7thousand then I doubt you'll find something that is all those things that you need your car to be.

If you're worried about salt and snow, and want AWD, a used SUV might fit into your $7000 budget.
(7K for a first car? That's about 10 times what I spent for mine!)

These are my picks-

A. Honda- CR-V, Fit/Jazz, Civic
B. Toyota- Yaris/ Echo, Rav 4, Highlander, 4Runner, Land Cruiser (maybe too fuel thirsty)
C. Mazda- 3 or 6
D. Nissan- Altima, Maxima or Sentra, Murano, Pathfinder, XTerra
E. Any Subaru (but they're not cheap)

Don't even think about American cars. They're not extremely reliable, at least compared to equivalent Japanese cars. German cars would be way past your budget.

Early 90s BMW M3 may suit you. The best option would be to get a Subaru :D

oh and to answer a few points, i think i can save 7000 in 3.5-4years mabye five. also an R32 was nice but like i said hard to find so i wasn't really considering it. plus how much would an audi from the early 90's cost in 4-5 years? you guys make it sound expensive. plus im sure a first gen Wrx cant be too bad. 0-60 in 5 well ok mabye not but ALOT of cars get there in low 6's. Now a used S4, i like the sound of that ill look into it.

because, well it trickles, jobs pay more, less of it gets taken in taxes (handy not having a queen ;) ), less in insurance, less in health care, less in gas prices, leaving much more disposable income. :)

Come back when you get some insurance quotes and calculate how much money will go to waste in fuel.

Uhu and how much do you think the insurance on a quick Subaru will be ? They also guzzle fuel. Cheap subarus are also rather spartan and cheap looking IMHO. Especially the older models. And girls don't like spartan cars with hard suspensions and harsh acceleration ;)

Indeed. I was looking to get an E36 too. It snows here quite a bit in winter and it gets icy, so I'd get some Michelin Pilot series all season or some other good all season tyres. I am not too sure on insurance though...

On insurance, a subaru with 200-250 or so horsepower, a 4cylinder under 3 litres and 4 doors won't be bad the only reason that they'll raise the prices on it is because of my age.

Please Canuck, do yourself a favour and ask for a quote at an insurance company for a car that you like (or a few cars), quotes are probably free anyway. And tell them that it's for a 17-18 y/o person who just got his license. The quote won't be "not that bad", it will be huge.
A Subaru will also probably be known as a serious sportcar by insurance companies because of their rally heritage. Which can only jack up the price.

7000 Canadian Dollars...

Which I'm guessing

7,000.00 CAD Canada Dollars = 3,443.10 GBP

After you check insurance quotes, check estimated maintainance and fuel costs. That's the true cost of a car, only then you know if you can afford it.

For example I think you could afford an old Porsche (or BMW, or Mercedes or Audi, etc) but the maintaince costs would break you.

Since you have 3 years or so, look around.
I'm in Ontario and found some incredible cars when I was young.

Among them I owned an '88 Nissan 300ZX which had been rebuilt by a mechanic/racer. The turbo had been tricked out to provide 16PSI of boost and it produced roughly 350HP, yet when driven "normally" still got 35 MPG!! Car was only $6600.00 best deal I ever had in my life. Amazimg car!

I don't know how the used car market or insurance policies are like in Ontario.

If you can get one of your parents to insure it in their name, that would help. Then you could look for a late 90's subaru legacy or impreza sedan, coupe, or wagon- since you want AWD. Then using one of your parents credit ,finance it, use that $CD 7K as a down payment and - depending on where you buy -. Then pay it off plus interest in lump sums out of your own pocket from your savings.

Thats one technique

:D Yes, it makes no sense to 'stretch your neck' out for a first car, but when he said he would have 7grand in 2-3 years i thinking he would have at least a part time job by then.

And what i see alot of people doing now is paying off in less than a year, if it like $CAD 14,000 and he pays like 4,000 down out of his 7,000, get a fixed monthly rate, he can use his mininium wage job part-time (with no responsiblities) and pay it off in lump payments ,in under a year if wants. Of course he won't have money for anything else after he pays the insurance which is under his parents name- which is why you should make a big deal out of your first car.
Just a thought.

OK so i just checked and $7k Canadian is a bit over $8k AUD. That's not a whole lotta money. At best you might get a good condition S13 or 180. I don't know if they ever went to Canadia, but first gen LT RWD celicas are pretty good, bit of fun, plenty of stuff out there to do to them. down under $8k could get you a pretty good one. For the amount of money you wanna spend, I wouldn't be holding your breath for anything that good
