I'm creating this thread - in part because of Vaigra - to have a decline in "what's this car" related threads.

This thread is where you can mention any car that you don't know about, have pictures of or only descriptions of. You can ask other members to help you with these, and there's undoubtedly plenty that have enough knowledge to help you out.

Here's a couple pics to start it off, a car I spotted in 2005, and have no idea of what it is. Any help would be appreciated. Original and zoomed pic provided.

Pretty sure it's a Davrian Mk8

Fellow Scot Andy Bryson raced A Mk8 in Aus regularly and in the Targa Tasmania and still competes in Imps in Australia regulalry I think ( not sure if he's still based out of Singapore ). I found a pic of Andy's but it's in Red ( but 8 yoears ago :) ). So this is either a new owner, new colour or another car.

EDIT:^^^^^^ Found a pic of him in Targa Tasmania a few years back

Thats a Porsche 356 Speedster.
Of bodystyle definitions as I know them:

a convertible but with detachable windscreen posts = a Speedster

Roadster = Speedster but with side-curtains in doors, not roll-up windows

Either way .. that hardtop is not a Speedster :p

Vaigra

Possibly a Porsche 356 C Coupé? , or a Porsche 356 T5 Coupé ?

Vaigra
04-11-2006, 01:14 PM
I don't think it's a T5, the front indicators are different on that. The one posted above has one vent on the rear. The T5 had one on the rear, the C coupe had two and the normal coupe had one centre one and two smaller ones, one on either side.
All the signs I see so far point to it being a replica..as it has a T5 rear and a normal coupe front..

bmwpower, I'm not sure anyoe coudl call on the Lancia Stratos replica or not.
Yes its a tacky paintjob and stickers, but as the original Stratos had a Ferrari V6 engine then a modern owner may wish to highlight that in their own way.
( the file is labelled "74" which woud put it smack in the Stratos productioin lifetime )

No, i have no idea. Its right hand drive so it could be british. If it is it could be a kit car, however i am unaware of a kit like this that is made from carbon fibre. It does look a little Ultima GTR from the looks of the sils, but i think that is box section steel (or something) with ally panels. Its obviously no expense spared because i see a Stack instrument pod behind the wheel.

I knew it looked familiar! I was just at their website the other day. Based on the wheels, I think it's a "MC-1EV Electlic model." To quote www.mitsuoka-model.com/english : "This model is an electric vehicle and is designed based on the MC-1," the MC-1 being a gasoline powered version of the same body-style. The MC-1 is described thus: "This model is for one passenger driving casually like a scooter with newly developed engine." It could also be the K-1, a kit car: "To support your dream to make up your original car by yourself. Not only people who love cars but also like mechanical things must have dreamed at least once. This model makes your dream come true."

Correctly identified, it's either a Mitsuoka MC-1 (-EV) or a K1. I have pictures but unfortunately the program to compress them into a folder (like .zip) is awful and I didn't end up finding out how to unzip the pictures.

Timothy (in VA)

It's a Checker Marathon, which was the ubiquitous New York City cab for most of the latter half of the 20th century. They were basically built to be cabs: big, roomy, and as solid as a tank (check out the size of that bumper; perfect for muscling lesser vehicles out of the way :D). I'm pretty sure that ordinary citizens could buy them though, if they were so inclined. Why anyone would paint one pink, God only knows.

It's the M1 turbo prototype as far as I know. It was powered 4 cylinder Turbo engine, much similar to that on the 2002. Later this was the basis design for the M1 with mounted a 6 cylinder 3500 engine with 286bhp.

A black one? If so that would be John Green's (of M-B Spares) who imported then tried to sell it for ages. Ostensibly cheap for a rare car (approx $17k IIRC) but at the time was unregisterable here as l/h/d & uncompliable

Seeing that all the cars in the pic seem to be AMG-tuned Benzes, coudn't the red saloon be the original AMG super saloon, the Mercedes-Benz 300 SEL 6.8 AMG?

If I'm not mistaken it was the first Mercedes ever tuned by AMG, and they raced it twice in the 24h of Spa, when they counted for the European Touring Car Championship, and it came second in '68 or '69 I think.

Probably could be although it looks like any other 6.3 to me and naturally from that pic its impossible to discern the engine's internal capacity. Although the pictured car does feature a chromed horse shoe on the grille :)

With the proviso that being on the other side of the world far from these long-ago events and I'm happy to be enlightened ..

This is what became of the literally-original AMG-modified 300 SEL 6.8
http://www.geocities.com/MotorCity/Downs/9323/w109amg.htm

AMG started out as a tiny concern which concentrated on motorsport and I always assumed that they would have converted very few 6.3s into 6.8 road-cars from new, if any - but I have little info on which to base this. I think they built only one or two examples for racing

Do you or anyone else anyone know how many 6.3s were originally converted by AMG into 6.8s?

Btw Mercedes 6.3 itself was a great machine and most mentions still claim it was the world's fastest production-sedan model. But definately by 1969 it was no longer the quickest accelerating four-door, and from 1970 not possessing the fastest top speed either. For trivia a 6.3 was purchased by a noted racer with the intention of competing in the 1969 Bathurst 500 mile enduro (which would've been fantastic to see) but untimately it was alas not entered after being adjudged not capable of outright honours

Well I don't know how many road going 300 SEL 6.3 were converted to 6.8 AMG-spec, but I found this link about the history of AMG.

AMG History. (http://www.germancarfans.com/print.cfm/ID/5040331.028)

There you have some interesting information, like the second overall and class victory of the AMG-entered in the 1971 (I was a bit wrong with the year) 24 hours of Spa.

Road-going cars wise, the modified some 300 SEL 6.3, updating the engine to 280bhp and beefing up the suspension and brakes. The scrit below the picture says that the red saloon is a 300 SEL 6.3, and not a 6.8, but I assume it's a 6.3 tuned by AMG.

And last the black coupe is a 5.6 CE AMG, nicknamed the Hammer, which had a 360bhp 5.6-litre V8 engine, and had a top speed in excess of 300km/h (186mph).

However there's no info of road going 300 SEL 6.8 AMG.

You're right. Infact I've seen one on kitcars.com for sale with the exact same paint job .. thats where I remember it from. As I said, it's a replica of the McLaren M6 (Can-Am) and in some forms, can be quite frighteningly fast. Nicely aerodynamic I would presume.

Number 1 is a Triumph TR4; the TR2 was much more curvaceous.

Number 2 I think is a 1954 Chevrolet or GMC pickup. I arrived at this conclusion based on the fact that the license plate says "BOBS 54," and I couldn't find any evidence that '54 Ford pickups had windows in the B-pillars.

Number 3 is a Buick Skylark like 250 GTO said, specifically it is a 1953 or 1954 model.

I came across this handsome coupe while searching for Borgward pics. It' so proportional and balanced but all I could get about its identity is that maybe it's a Ford. The site was in German...

What's this car?

go.pawel
05-07-2006, 01:30 AM
It's OSI 20M TS. Produced by OSI (Officine Stampaggi Industriali), a branch of Ghia established in 1960 to build small series of cars for other manufacturers. It's based on German Ford Taunus and was sold in Ford's dealerships. It was produced only in 1967 and 1968, between 2200 and 3400 cars were made, according to various sources. I've also seen pictures of a spider version, though I don't know if it was a regular model or some concept/conversion.

Good call, go-pawel. I found the same pic in a bigger version using the OSI name in the search.

http://osi.taunus.nl/meeting2002/index.htm

Also, I didn't see any pics of the spider in this OSI dedicated site, so possibly the one you've seen was a conversion.

It's definitely not an Eldorado, as this name was reserved for coupe/cabrio models (apart from the fantastic Eldorado Brougham). It's either Cadillac 62 or Sedan de Ville.

It's a 1959 Cadillac, either a Sedan de Ville or a Series 62; I'm not sure how one would distinguish between the two. For 1959, Cadillac sedans were available with two different tops: the 4-window, like the one in the picture, or the 6-window which was much more sloped, and also more popular.

It's not an Eldorado; all Eldorados are 2-doors.

I thought the RD350 was one without the "bodykit", but that's totally based on assumtion and I don't have any proof to back it up. I assumed that the matchin RD408H search could perhaps mean that it's an updated or kitted out version. Alright, I'm going absolutely nuts about a car I spotted today which I have NO idea of what it is. Unfortunately the car wasn't at a still stand long enough to allow me to take pictures, but due to traffic lights I got a pretty good look at it. I'll try to describe it and use other pictures for design cues.

The lights were very similar to picture #1's, but then turned more on the side and including the indicator in the pod. The headlights werey firmly placed on the outside corners of a relatively straight nose, with - from memory - one or two vents. It had a gradually inward sloping bumper, nothing sharp and it all fit very well. It had a classic shape, long bonnet (V8 up front) with a spacious two seat interior and a very airy look to the cabin, with no high quarters or spoilers obscuring any view. The front silhouette looked remarkably similar to that of the Alfa Montreal up to the door, with perhaps a slightly lower front bumper. The rear looks almost identical to the rear in picture #3, but instead of the lights being placed vertically they were horizontal.
That's about as well as I can describe it, I really hope someone knows something similar to what I'm talking about 'cause it's tearing at me. Oh and it's not one of the "obvious" cars, I caught a glimpse of the badge and it wasn't anything I've seen before.

Is this a Marcos?

It's a Tupperware ride of what looks like decent quality... that is, it's not ugly. Would be nice to see a complete profile, but the proportions are a little exaggerated as is often the case with kit cars.

There are obvious design elements of both the Cheetah and Kellison Astra (K4?), and the tail is certainly influenced by Bill Mitchell's Mako Shark of the mid-1960s. The rear deck even looks a little like the Cobra Daytona Coupe. or Iso. Someone was pretty creative with their "plagurisms"

A search of vintage kit car sites turned up some truly awful looking "sports" cars. This looks to be fairly sophisticated, though.

Are you sure it is? I think it isn't, I'm more inclined to an early Jaguar Saloon (Mk V?) or an Armstrong-Siddeley...

Doesn't look like a Rolls for me. I'd go also for an Armstrong-Siddeley or something similar.

I can only find A-S pictures showing the front. If it is one it can only be a Sapphire.

Here's an odd one I spotted in Helsinki:
I know it's a UAZ but the model is a questionmark, my searches lead me to believe it's either a 451, 452, 3962, 39625, 3909 or 3741. What made me give up was when I found the same pictures of what I believe is this model on different pages but with different model names. Can anyone give me a definite answer?

This car is generally known as UAZ 451/452 (different engines).
But during the 80s the name was changed to:
3741/3746 - van
2206/22069 (earlier 452W) - 11-passenger microbus
3962 (earlier 452A) - ambulance based on the microbus
3303/33035/330036 (earlier 452 DM) - pick-up
In 1995 also a kombi version was added, named 3909.

The car on the photo is most probably the 3909 kombi version.

As conclusion, it's either or, a Vemac for certain.

EDIT: Ok nevermind, I didn't see the picture names :o. Still missing the RD in front of the 350 though. :p

The image name means nothing . . . that's the name I gave it because it's what I thought it said on the plate.

I can tell you it isn't, I can't tell you what it is though...:(

EDIT Damn someone beat me again...

This would apear to be the same unknown I have listed as #4
closest I can get is its similarity to a Daytona. But it obviousely isn't one. Maybe some kit based on it.
Maybe it can be tracked by the California plate.

I'm more inclined to a coachbuilt Sliver Wraith/Silver Dawn (though I can't find which), Silver Clouds have different front ends (radiator grilles change).

on second thoughts it could be a 1750, as the 2000GTV had a different double headlight configuration, with about 6-7 chrome bars in the grille. This front was also used on the final versions of the 1300 junior (an example of that is hown here in the Alfa museum). The 1750 had the double headlights with two differently sized lights and one chrome bar, but I am not sure whether that was unique to the 1750 or was also applied to later versions of the 1600.

With that front end I would say it's not a GT Junior but probably a GTV 1750 or 2000

It's the "new" De Tomaso Pantera. Was planned for 2004, but apparently nothing came out of it.

I'm glad nothing did come of it, it's hideous compared to the Pantera we all know and love :)
I also see signs of Veyron in the rear in that prototype.

Thiese shots were taken during the factory meeting early September 1999.

but i dont know what it is, and i'm sure i've seen it before on this site but i havent got a clue where to start looking. and lets face it there's quite a few categories to look in.. can anyone save me a load of time and work?
cheers.
also yesterday was incredible, particularly the lambo with the 'i heart you' numberplate... i wonder where his catalyser went? in fact i wonder if he had any exhaust plumbing at all...
Sorry for the late reply, but that is the Farboud GT '02

The first one is a Bentley Continental (1984-1995) and the second one a Rolls Royce Silver Wraith II (1977-1980), which was a LWB Silver Shadow II.

If you don't know about RR's and Bentleys this (www.rrab.com) will be useful.

It does it was the first Bentley post-war sportscar, well sort of as in my opinion it classifies more as a long distance yourer than a sportscar. Only 207 were made between 1952 and 1955 and it had a tuned 4.6-litre straight six, repalced in the later cars by a tuned 4.9-litre straight six, this made it capable of 200km/h. All in all fantastic car and the Continental GT just doesn't do it justice.
