Can this actually have a negative effect on the condition and life of the engine if he does this all the time?

Yes.
The message you entered is too short :)

Putting "regular" in instead of "premium" doesn't really do anything, you just loose a bit of performance.
A few tank fulls of better stuff should get it back to "normal".
Stupid comments really.

Maybe this only applies to turbocharged cars, though the compression ratio in a Gallardo might be comparable, but can't lower octane gas make the enging prone to knocking? (pre-detonaton)
Of course, in a modern engine the knock sensor(s) take care of all that, retarding the ignition and cutting power.
I know that unleaded in my Subaru (sometimes that's all you can get in parts of Arkansas) makes the engine feel like it's hit the rev limiter whenever it starts to build boost, and about the best you can do is limp to somewhere that's got 93-octane (as good as it gets here) and a bottle of octane booster.

You've hit the nail on the head there, Quail - all it will do is retard ignition times... when they say 'designed to run on Optimax' all they mean is "we've advanced the ignition timing a bit more than we might have done a couple of years ago but the engine will still operate without it (or at least the ECU will compensate) but we won't tell you that because we're sponsored by Shell and we get cash everytime they mention us in their adverts"

We've got shady little country gas stations (where you can still buy snack food that you thought disappeared twenty years ago) out in the wildnerness of Arkansas. I had to either get some from a station that was half a single-wide trailer once in a place called Botkinburg, or stay there forever. My car barely started. I suspect that the mystery juice was about 10% water, and if my ignition hadn't been retarded, the engine would probably blown straight up through the hood in a comedic fasion, before coming back down through the roof and crushing me. I really couldn't use over a quarter throttle at anything past 1,000 rpm.
But on 90 octane, I can't tell any noticable difference.

What are u doin man!? You're wrecking your engine! Your putting 87 Octane instead of 92 (I think its 92)! A geniune retar...I mean cheapo:p
